忘恩负义，天人也会嫌弃

Devas are repulsed by the ungrateful

忘恩负义之徒，对别人的深恩厚德不但不报答，反而嗤之以鼻。

Ungrateful people do not repay others’ deep kindness to them; instead, they sneer their contempt for them.

这样的人，护法、天人也会嫌弃，最后谁都不愿意护持他。

These people are discarded by Dharma protectors and devas, and eventually, no one will be on their side.

有些人所做之事极易成功，而有些人却一波三折，这是什么原因呢？

In undertaking any task, some people always sail through smoothly, whereas others constantly have a bumpy ride. What could be the causes?

除了各自福报不同以外，关键还要看有没有护法、天人的帮助。

Well, besides differences in each individual’s merit and fortune, another key factor is whether there is support from devas and Dharma protectors.

而若想获得他们的鼎力相助，必须要有完善的人格，尤其要懂得知恩报恩。

To be granted their generous help, one must first possess moral integrity, especially in acknowledging and repaying others’ kindness.

麦彭仁波切在《君规教言论》中也说：“知恩图报之诸人，护法神亦恒守护。”

In Code of Conduct for Sovereigns, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche says, “A person who is grateful for others’ kindness and tries to repay it is always looked after by Dharma protectors.”

倘若一个人不懂感恩，也不去报恩，还昧着良心害自己的恩人，

Ungrateful people never acknowledge or repay others’ kindness; instead, they harm their benefactors with no pangs of conscience.

就像有些人不但不孝顺父母，反而百般虐待他们；

For example, some people are not only impious to their parents but also mistreat them badly.

有的老板一手栽培了一个人，可这个人却把老板的钱财一卷而光……

A protégé, trained and groomed by his or her boss, runs away with all the boss’s money.

对于这种行为，护法、天人皆不高兴，从此不愿再守护此人，他的一切所为也会不吉祥。

Devas and Dharma protectors are most displeased with this kind of behavior and will forego their protection of the offenders, who in turn will have to suffer inauspicious experiences.

昔日，有个商人的独生女，年方十六，长得娇艳动人。

Once upon a time, a merchant had an only daughter who turned sixteen and was strikingly beautiful.

她住在宫殿般的房子里，昼夜有仆人伺候。

This budding maiden lived in a palace-like mansion and was served by attendants day and night.

一天，一名年轻的强盗被捕，手脚被绑着，正赴往刑场。

One day, a doomed young bandit with his hands and feet in shackles was being led to the execution ground.

当时，商人的女儿正好在楼上看见，不禁一见钟情，

The merchant’s daughter happened to see the bandit passing by from her upper floor and couldn’t help but fall in love with him at first sight.

当下就告诉父母：如果不让自己嫁给那个囚犯，宁可现在跳楼死去。

She declared then and there to her parents: If she were not allowed to marry the bandit, she would rather jump to her death right away.

无奈之下，爱女如命的父亲便以2000银币贿赂衙役和刽子手，带走了年轻囚犯。

The merchant, who adored his daughter with his life, had no choice but to comply. He bribed the officers and the executioner with two thousand silver coins and ransomed the young bandit.

女儿如愿嫁给囚犯后，为了赢得丈夫的欢心，天天把所有贵重的饰品戴在身上，并亲手为丈夫做饭。

After marrying the bandit, the daughter tried to please her husband, adorning herself with lavish jewelry every day and personally cooking meals for him.

几天之后，年轻的囚犯想：“什么时候才能杀了这无知的女人，取走她的财物，好好地享受一番。”

However, barely a few days had passed before the bandit plotted, “When can I get rid of this stupid woman and snatch all her possessions for my own enjoyment?”

于是，他开始绝食。

He then went on a fast.

女人问他为何如此，他说：“我有心愿未了。

The woman asked him why. He said, “I have an unfulfilled pledge.

当被送往刑场时，我默默发愿：若能获救，将供养一座山顶的神仙。

When I was led to the execution ground, I prayed silently that were I rescued, I would pay homage to the deity of a holy mountain.

现在我能拥有你这么美丽的妻子，完全是神仙所赐，所以我想前去还愿。”

For me, to have a beautiful wife like you resulted from the deity’s blessing. Therefore, I want to go to the mountain to express my gratitude personally.”

女人听后，欣然为丈夫准备了一切，并把自己的贵重饰品全部穿戴上身，和他一起上路了。

Hearing her husband’s explanation, the woman gladly made all the preparations, and after adorning herself with all her precious jewelry, she set off with him.

到了山顶，囚犯脸色一变，恶狠狠地说：“我没有什么供奉要做，就是想杀了你，带走你所有的饰物！”

After reaching the mountaintop, the bandit’s face suddenly turned dark and he said menacingly, “I have no homage to pay. I only want to kill you and rob you of all your jewelry!”

女人苦苦哀求放她一条生路，并愿将身上所有饰物全给他，但囚犯不为所动。

The woman pleaded for her life and offered him all her ornaments, but the bandit wouldn’t budge.

危急之下，女人想：“古人说：‘智慧不但可以煮，还可以吃。’我得想个办法来对付他。”

Desperate, the woman thought, “The ancients said, ‘Wisdom is not only to be cooked, but also to be eaten.’ I must come up with a way to deal with him.”

于是她说：“当初我让父亲花2000银币把你救出来，应该对你有恩吧。

She then said, “My father paid two thousand silver coins to save your life. Don’t you think you owe him a debt of gratitude?

现在我恳求你，在我临死前向你礼拜。”

Now please allow me to prostrate to you before I die.”

“好吧！”

“Fine!”

于是她向丈夫礼拜，对他转绕三圈后，又向四方朝拜，

So she prostrated to her husband, circumambulated around him three times, and prostrated again to the four cardinal directions.

接着说：“以后你再也见不到我了，我也见不到你了。”

Finally she said, “From now on, you’ll never see me again and I’ll never see you again.”

说完上前和他拥抱，突然乘他不留意，用尽全身力气把他推下了山崖……

Thus spoken, she went to embrace him, and while he was not on guard, pushed him down the cliff with all her might.

可见，一个人若忘恩负义，下场必定不太好。

No good ending will come to a thankless person.

或许有人问：“佛教不是讲空性吗？

Perhaps someone may counter, “Isn’t emptiness the doctrine of Buddhism?

既然高低、贤劣都是平等一味，为什么还要分别好人、坏人？

Since high and low, right and wrong are equal, why make distinctions between good guys and bad guys?

干嘛这样斤斤计较、利害分明？”

Why bother to draw such fine lines between advantages and disadvantages?”

有这种想法，是对佛法一知半解的表现。

This attitude reveals a fragmented knowledge of the Buddhadharma.

实际上，学佛并不是教你要像块石头一样，什么取舍的智慧都没有。

In reality, Dharma study is not meant to turn you into something like a rock devoid of any discerning wisdom.

万法有胜义和世俗之别，其中，世俗中也有好坏之分。

All phenomena are to be understood separately in regards to the two truths of absolute and relative, and from the perspective of relative truth there is a distinction between good and bad.

尽管以嗔心报仇，是大乘佛教不允许的，但了知取舍、明辨是非，这是做人的基本原则。

Although Mahayana teachings forbid exacting revenge with hatred, practitioners still have to uphold the basic principles of behaving oneself, knowing right from wrong and what to adopt and what to abandon.

请记住，不管是谁对自己有恩，我们一定要想办法报答。

Please bear in mind that whenever we receive a favor, we must try our best to return it.

退一步说，假如暂时报不了，也应该把内心的感激告诉他。

If it can’t be done in the moment, we should at least make our appreciation known to our benefactors.
